A skilful blend of natural elegance, casually tasteful
... "An atmosphere combining classical and baroque spirit, dull colours and natural materials with a few more countryside elements" ... "A place where you feel immediately comfortable and happy from morning to evening, around generous and refined tables."
Expansive and spectacularly memorable
"Another magical visit. We arrived in pouring rain, but what better consolation than to be welcomed by our warm-hearted host, Marty, and invited to cosy up by an enormous roaring fire before being served a candle-lit dinner in the gorgeous drawing room? Next day the sun came out and we were able to marvel at the wildflower meadows cascading down from the avenue of limes overlooking the rolling charolais landscape. Our fellow-guests that evening were a delightful young couple who became engaged on the terrace, and I can think of no more perfect little piece of heaven in which to receive a proposal! Thanks Rosie. What an amazing find! We were thrilled by our visit and long to return. Just before we arrived we had a slight accident involving a local motorist and - our French not being quite up to the occasion - we asked her to accompany us to the chateau to get help in translation. Marty was quite wonderful, smoothing ruffled feathers and charming everyone with so much warmth, kindness and impish humour that we all relaxed, and instead of it spoiling our holiday we felt so looked after that we look back on our visit as a highlight of our trip.
Everything about Marty and the chateau is expansive and spectacularly memorable, and the love and flair with which he and Thierry have restored, decorated and furnished their home is heart-warming, as is the generosity with which they share it. The far-reaching views from their hill-top avenue are glorious: it would be very tempting to return and see their wonderful garden and grounds in all the different seasons. Add to that a charming landscape dotted with mellow old villages and Romanesque churches, grazed by charolais cattle and alive with birdsong: what more could you ask for?"

Why not stay in a real chateau
“There is nothing to beat staying in a real chateau. For a couple of days you feel like a prince, or a duke, or a marquis. The ambiance is just great and the views from the chateau are breath-taking. The rooms are large and have all modern facilities. The area is beautiful, with excellent views, it does not matter in which direction you go.
Cluny and the château de Drée are very near and are well worth a visit. Allow yourself to be spoilt in this authentic part of France.”

Fantastic Accommodation and hospitality
We stayed as a stop over on the way back from Fréjus, South of France. Marty is a fantastic host, the children ate before us and went off up to bed leaving us to have a feast of restaurant standard food with the other guests and plenty of wine. Our room was great, full of character, clean and really comfortable. The chateau is wonderful with grounds to peruse at your leisure and impressive views across the valley. Marty could not do enough to make us feel welcome and during our short stay nothing was too much trouble (our three children are quite demanding) - well worth the money, if we get the chance we will definitely be back.

Categorically, the finest accommodation and hospitality I've ever encountered
“We stayed just one brief night in the Chateau de Vaulx, as a stop over on the drive back up from the South of France. We had booked a meal, but were heavily delayed on the roads - we rang Marty, the owner, to tell him, thinking that we would have to cancel dinner; but he was very reassuring and kind, told us not to worry, and that we would have dinner whenever we arrived.
In the end, we arrived exhausted, with nerves frayed, at half past 9 at night, after 10 hours of hell on the road... and the reception we received was the PERFECT antidote to our appalling day.
Firstly, the region. Although it was getting dark, we could see that we were in stunning surroundings - beautiful, bucolic rolling countryside, the archetypal rustic serenity you hope to find in France, but are so often disappointed not to get. We immediately felt a sense of peace and calm in the middle of this rural paradise.
Then the chateau itself. A historic, and classical building, superbly restored by Marty - inside and out - to reflect utmost sympathy for the period, while ensuring the modern visitor is comfortable (Marty seems to have a past in Architecture and Interior Design). You immediately feel like you are being treated to your very own French stately home, as you walk around the tall towers of the main building, and walk into the many rooms inside that are bedecked with authentic period furniture, paintings, timepieces and original 17th century fireplaces. But the atmosphere isn't stuffy, or uptight - Marty sets you at ease - tells you to make yourself comfortable and go where you wish; you feel as if you are having the chance to taste the kind of life the nobility prefers to keep to itself. It also boasts incredible views from all sides, perched as it is on a hill, and overlooking the delightful countryside. My wife kept remarking that this really was a fairytale escape.
Marty allowed us to settle in, then served us dinner in the very romantic drawing room - with a huge roaring fire next to us. Bearing in mind that this was now 10pm, he insisted on preparing our dinner freshly. We had a delightful 4 course meal - a leek and onion tart with ingredients from the chateau's garden, a casseroled beef (again with local beef, and fresh potatoes from the garden), local cheeses, and apple and raisin tart (freshly made). With wine served from a crystal decanter, this magnificent feast in these remarkable surroundings cost a meagre 60 Euros - considering we had spent the last week and a half spending 120-150 Euros on 2 course meals of questionable quality in the South, this represented outstanding value.
Marty left us to relax in piece next to the fire, and told us to get up as and when we pleased, and to take time to enjoy the chateau the next day. There were no urgent demands for us to check out by any particular time - the message was "your pleasure is my pleasure". Marty is truly the most hospitable and considerate host I have ever met - in any professional or social capacity. We cannot sing his praises highly enough!
We stayed in the Chambre de Mello, which is furnished with many period features, and has a wonderful view over the hills. The bathroom however is very modern, with excellent shower facilities - so there is no sense of compromise in the experience. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the peace and quiet was blissful. Considering the day we had had, this experience was a godsend.
After a wonderful night's sleep, we enjoyed an excellent breakfast, and were then able to walk around the grounds before we moved on to our next stop in Champagne. The gardens are beautiful, and this made it even more difficult for us to move on. We wish we'd stayed a week here - you could easily do that, and more. This experience eclipsed the rest of our holiday, and we will certainly return.
(There are also a few very friendly furry friends - a cat and some delightful dogs). Although my wife is not a big pet person, they were so well behaved, that if you wanted to play with them you could without fear of having to fight them off! And in the end we both did, as they were too adorable to resist!)”

Top service, definitely recommended
"We received a very warm welcome from Marty when we arrived at short notice during our "Sawdays Road Trip" from Somerset to Italy. Chateau de Vaulx is a fabulous building that has undergone some serious renovations in recent years. Being a building geek I was fascinated by Marty's account of the works and history of his home. We enjoyed lovely walks around the grounds and a delicious breakfast - top service, definitely recommended."

Marty is the founder of hospitality
“During our summer holiday, we stayed four days in the chateau. This is the perfect example of how an upper-class chambers d’hôte should work. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good diner good breakfast, romantic and clean rooms.”

A faultless visit
“We spent three sumptuous nights at Chateau de Vaulx. We were warmly met by host Marty who is greatly blessed with the gift of hospitality. No request was too difficult - breakfast was arranged on the terrace with warm breads, cheeses, and confitures and a stunning view - Marty booked lunch for us at a nearby Michelin-starred restaurant. The room was tastefully and romantically furnished and the grounds are a delight. We enjoyed a faultless visit."

A chateau with a view!
“We stayed at the Chateau de Vaulx in July for two nights on our way to the Alps. This lovely rustic chateau is set on top of the beautiful hills of the charollais region
We stayed in the suite Geoffray, which has in my opinion the best view of the hills and villages around. Marty is a superb cook and a great host, drinks were offered to us on our arrival as a welcome. The breakfast served to us was excellent. This place is perfect to relax and read a book after the hustle and bustle of Paris... Would recommend to anyone!!! Only comment would be fun to have a pool available.”

A delightful experience
“We stayed six nights at Vaulx while visiting friends in the area. From the first minute that Marty welcomed us we were home. Our room was charming and well restored. The views in every direction were breath taking. Breakfast was included and it was a full Dutch type rather than French continental.

Relaxation with Style
“We had two wonderful nights at this beautiful hilltop Chateau. This fabulous building has been restored with a great deal of love and attention to detail. It is stylish, welcoming and full of history. Our room was stunning, the sitting room with roaring fire was a peaceful haven and the views are magnificent. We were very well looked after by our host Vince who made us feel totally at home and did everything to make our stay relaxing and memorable. We were so impressed with everything Chateau de Vaulx had to offer and we will certainly return.

We arrived later than hoped with a tired toddler and crying baby
But Marty immediately arranged for a small hot meal for our little one, whilst giving us time to put the baby to bed. We stayed for only one night en route to the South and could not have been made more welcome by Marty. Our suite was beautiful, the food lovely and the stay too short. We will certainly book up for next year.

We loved the Chateau de Vaulx
What a find this place was! Located in the Charolais-Brionnais region of France, this wonderfully funky chateau is a perfect place for a romantic getaway. Still in the process of being restored, the available rooms are very large and clean with wonderfully updated bath facilities. We stayed in "La chambre Duchêne" which was very nice. Marty, the host and co-owner, is delightful and so willing to explain the history of the Chateau and the restoration process. The scenery from the grounds was breathtaking, even on a rainy spring day. We would also recommend table d'hôtes – Marty is an excellent cook - with dinner served in the dining room with other guests. We thoroughly enjoyed sharing our meal with a delightful Dutch family. Breakfast is also served in the dining room and was very good.
